Getting the Right Help

Being a newbie writer can be tough. You’ve slaved away over your ‘masterpiece’, your partner, mum and loyal friends ‘love’ it, it’s word perfect and ready for submission. You wait in eager anticipation, then the sorry THUD of rejected said masterpeice, along with a polite ‘thanks but no thanks’….You try again, same thud beckons…and again, and again.

But, there is hope. It’s called the writing community. As I said in my last post, I’ve been genuinely surprised and touched by the friendly and generous nature of this highly competitive industry. There is a wealth of successful, published writers out there who offer extremely helpful critique services, which I think are very good value for money and well worth a go. They respectfully point out you where you’re going wrong and suggest new ideas, all without making you feel like a fool!

Helen Hunt  offers an excellent critique service as well as some great courses. I’ve been to two and have not only enjoyed her wealth of useful hints and tips but also the chance to meet and chat with other writers. Her courses often include a critique of your work as well which I think is a great deal.

Over the coming weeks, I’ll be blogging about other helpful people and organisations which I think offer useful advice and tips, are good value (some are even free!)

Oh, and I’m off to one of Helen’s writing days tomorrow, a writing retreat. I’ll be blogging about that too.

Brand New Blog!

Hello and welcome to my new writing blog. I’ve been a ‘serious’ writer (as in actually finishing work and submitting it to various markets) for about eighteen months now. Having gained a very small amount of success, I feel it’s high time I started to engage some more in the online writing community – which I must say never ceases to amaze me with its generosity of knowledge and friendliness.

So, I’ll be blogging on here about my writing; the highs, lows and the ‘re-marketing opportunities’ (we all know what that means, right?!), plus books, films, short stories and anything else that takes my interest (I’ll try to keep on topic though, promise!). Please stop by and say hello!

*slightly nervously toasts her new blog!*
